8 Weeks

Hello my beautiful readers and happy 2016 to you! Can you believe we are already in the second month of this new year??!? I don’t even know how that’s possible.

I want to officially introduce my little miracle to all of you. Jackson Shaler was born at 7:29 p.m. on December 8th weighing 7 lbs, 9 oz. It was a ridiculously easy labor process….my epidural was a gift from the Lord and I only pushed for 13 minutes. We did have some complications right after he was born (super low blood pressure with some blackouts and puking and all that glory for me, and some fluid in his lungs for the first couple hours for him) but overall we were both happy and healthy and totally in love.

Meet our little Jackson:

Oh my goodness, we are so in love. This little guy has turned our entire universe upside down in the best of ways. He turns 8 weeks old today and I simultaneously can’t believe that he’s already so old yet not several years old at the same time. Hasn’t he just always been with us? But how is he turning two months old next week???

I’m going to attempt to answer all the commonly-asked questions….but feel free to comment and leave a question if you’re curious about something!

How am I doing?

Good! Really good. I’ll admit, I had a hard time at the beginning. When you take a girl who needs about 10 hours of sleep at night to really feel rested and give her a baby who wants to be nursed and held for 6 hours straight in the middle of the night instead, she may cry every time she sees her nice comfy bed that doesn’t have her in it. But we got past that and now he sleeps a good 5 hours before waking up to eat, and then another 3-4 hours after that. Sleep. I solemnly swear I will never take you for granted ever again as long as I live.

Does he eat well?

I am 100% nursing him and he eats extremely well. He has a slight lip tie so we had some latching issues there at the beginning. (Read: he almost killed my girls.) But this boy loves to eat and is gaining weight faster than the doctor’s standards. I think newborns are supposed to gain 1/2-1 oz. every day and he is gaining about 2. (!!!) I’m predicting multiple fat rolls in the coming weeks as he continues to gain weight and I’m totally okay with that. The juicy babies are the cutest ones anyways.  ;)

How is he sleeping?

Like I said before, he does pretty good now. We probably get a total of 8-9 hours of sleep total every night. On the really good days he’ll go 6-7 hours before he wakes up to eat, but his normal is 5 hours. After that we usually get another good 2-4 hour stretch. He’s not the best day-time napper though. I usually have to put him in the baby carrier or let him fall asleep nursing for him to get a good nap during the day. This little boy loves looking around at everything!

Am I enjoying being at home all day?

YES. Quitting my job is still the best decision I’ve ever made. It’s hard on the fussy days…..when all he wants to do is whine and cry and I can’t help him. But those days are getting fewer and the happy-smiley days are getting to be the normal which just makes it that much sweeter. My only struggle is figuring out my time management. I still have my bookkeeping business and the last eight weeks have been a struggle trying to fit that in between cleaning, laundry and cooking. I’ll give you a hint: I’ve only cooked 1 dinner since he was born. I’m not even sure I know how to cook anymore.

How is Roman?

You guys, he is such a great Dad. I have loved watching him grow in his new role. Jackson adores him too. We heard a lot about how newborns are really attached to their mommy (especially 100% breastfed babies) and so the dad can have some sadness there at the beginning when his child seems to be indifferent towards him. That has not been the case. Jackson has started giving Roman the biggest smiles when he comes home from work and he loves “talking” and laughing at him in the evenings. Seriously y’all, it melts my heart to see them together. And don’t even get me started on how great a help-mate he has been for me. From the cooking to the cleaning to getting me another glass of water, he has been there for me every day without complaint. I hit the jackpot with this guy, I’m telling ya.

What about Duke?

Oh, Duke. Poor little Duke. He literally does not care about the baby. Every so often he will walk by and lick his head, but other than that he completely ignores him. We are currently in a battle because he seems to know when the baby is asleep and decides in those moments to bark at something on the wall that is not there. I think things will get much better once I start taking him jogging again…he just has too much energy and you can’t exactly play tug-of-war with a 70 pound dog while holding a baby.  ;) But I’ve been released to exercise now so happier days are in store for the baby-dog.

What’s my favorite thing about motherhood? Is it what I expected it to be?

In a way it is, and in a way it isn’t. I read quite a bit (probably too much) in the months leading up to his birth so I expected those first few weeks to be hard. At the same time, you don’t truly understand what sleep deprivation does to you until you actually experience it. And I never expected nursing to be as difficult as it was. Trust me, if we could have afforded to give him formula I would’ve given up on nursing a long time ago. Now we are finally getting in the groove of things though so I’m glad we stuck it out. My absolute favorite thing is watching him grow. He started smiling at us towards the end of week 4 and it is the best thing EVER. Now he is starting to recognize his hands and it’s been so fun watching him discover new things. He will hold them up in front of his face and watch himself move them around. I love watching him as he recognizes his environment….laughing at the bunnies on his mobile and squealing at his stuffed tiger.

There ya have it! I’m over 1,000 words so I suppose I’ll stop gushing about my new child now. But you know, totally expect more gushing in the future.  ;)  I will not promise more regular posts because I’m still struggling to keep clean underwear in the drawers, but hopefully as I continue to learn how to handle a tiny person I’ll start to get things a little better under control. *fingers crossed* I love you guys so much! I know so many of you have been praying for us and I can’t tell you how much that means to us. I hope all of us have a fantastic 2016….mine’s looking pretty good so far! And be sure to follow me on Instagram to get your fill of cute baby-ness.

Oh, he’s so beautiful! I am with you on the nursing. That is one steep learning curve! And it’s not really something you can learn to do ahead of time. I’m glad that his birth was such a good experience for you!

Do people usually think he looks like you or like Roman?

    • That’s so true! I tried reading a lot beforehand but it’s not like you can practice before they get here!

It’s kind of split down the middle. A lot of his family say they look like Roman, and then my family says he looks like me. A lot of our friends say he looks like me to though. I think I see both of us in him. :D

      How’s your little man doing?
